Garden Description
A TRIANGULAR SHAPED CITY GARDEN, HEREFORD
Description: A three storey brick townhouse block with a partially shady, grassd triangular back garden, a sunny grassed front garden and a paved shady side area (useful for the grandchildren to play in). The clients have been there a year and needed ideas to make the most of the unusual shape. They are keen gardeners.
Brief: New planting areas were key; paved areas for sitting; a small area of grass for Marshall their deaf dog. Safe pathways to the rear access as both clients have mobility issues; a vegetable garden in the front with slightly raised beds to enable kneeling when gardening. Re-design existing steps to make them safer. Side garden to be left as it is, but we used the colour of its charcoal paving to link the back and front gardens.
Design elements: A blue and grey hard landscaping palette with blue engineering brick, stone paving, crushed blue-purple slate and timber.
Back: A diagonal 60/30° design was used to maximise the width of the garden using brick, paving and timber. Decorative patterns divide the garden into zones with a herringbone pattern for the main terrace, a running pattern for the path and stone paving for the smaller terrace and bin area. A raised timber planting bed divides the garden, giving it height interest. The pergola was eventually omitted. All fencing and trellis will be painted dark blue in Spring 2023 in drier weather.
Front: A kitchen garden area was created with timber sleepers; a new single timber step replaces the 3 hazardous shallow steps. The paths are a beautiful, crushed blue-purple slate. The existing concrete paved front path was retained.
Planting: The client is planting the garden herself.
